Join Aída Walqui at Education Week’s Online Summit, Supporting Struggling Readers: Challenges and Strategies for Educators, to be held on Wednesday, February 16, 10:00 a.m.–11:30 a.m. (PT) / 1:00 p.m.–2:30 p.m. (ET).

Aída Walqui directs the National Research and Development Center for Improving the Education of English Learners in Secondary Schools at WestEd, where she started one of the agency’s signature programs, the Quality Teaching for English Learners (QTEL) initiative.

Education Week’s free online summit examines the unique challenges that older struggling readers face, which strategies work in supporting them, and how teachers and others can use these strategies effectively.

Teaching literacy to middle- and high-schoolers who are still learning English presents its own set of challenges. In her session, Essential Practices for Building Literacy in Older English Learners, Walqui will illustrate how to apply what’s known about teaching adolescent literacy to meet the specialized needs of these readers at a crucial time in their educational development.

Walqui will be joined by Catherine Gewertz, Senior Contributing Writer at Education Week. Gewertz wrote the recent article, Essential Practices for Building Literacy in Older English Learners.
